I am 58. In late 2021, I started to changed my diet, reduce carbs, excess sugar and fast from 4pm until 8am. I walk three to four times per week for about 30 minutes. My physican was blown away that 10 months later at my normal yearly checkup that I lost 89 pounds. My labs were superb too.
I am in better physical and mental health today with no meds than I was in 2004 when I was anxious, bloated and on multiple meds.
Hi Doctor Jason Fung, I happened to find your Youtube channel and this page. Your medical sharings are so insightful and mind-opening. Especially the fasting process. I have practised fasting for a while and it improves my metabolism and overall health significantly as well as cleansing the heart. Could you share more articles like this, also about cancer? Thank you so much!
Dr. Fung we stumbled on your writings a few years ago and what a life change! Struggling with those same 50 pounds my entire life (literally since my teens) trying every silly diet, spending tons of money, only to regain and frustrate myself. Then you and your fasting concept - game changer. For the cost of a few books to wducate myself in the whole fasting/insulin resistance concept - and no more struggle with the weight. Brilliant and so darn cheap and easy.
Hello Dr Fung. Thank you for your book teaching what happens in the body when you fast. I read it years ago, and it changed my life my life and understanding.
I thought I’d let you know, though, that I developed a small health problem- acid reflux … and years later came across this article that explained why:
(Please read, at least, the subheadings: “The Bile” and “chapter 3: The stomach” near the middle of the article)
When I was intermittently fasting, I would tend to eat a large meal during the time I permitted myself to eat.
The article was, unfortunately very long, but it gave a good explanation for why small meals are important. Keeping portions “normal sized” keeps the upper and lower stomach valves closed, so the hydrochloric acid, and the bile stay separate and do not neutralize each other.
This is also a reason to not drink water at meals, and why carbonation feels satisfying, but is actually bad during meals. The water and gas force the lower stomach valves open and let some out (so the stomach feels settled), but the food ends up not getting dissolved by the hydrochloric acid, plus it leaks into the bile and both get neutralized. So the parts of the food that needed acid to be digested, end up at the top of the small intestine, not getting digested. This also lets parasites survive until they can get into the upper intestine, and find themselves a shelter.
I believe this may need to be taken into account as part of ending a fast…
Thank you again for your book, and your possible interest in this matter.

Are you saying glycolysis and lipolysis do not occur simultaneously ?

https://medicurious.substack.com/p/no-56-the-diet-ladder?r=p3tn3 Dr Fung your article was very clear and persuasive. The above short post might be on interest to your readers.
Curious what is the body's reaction to fasting and carb restriction? How long does recovery take?
